(Note: we’re starting this blog at the beginning of Day 3, but we’re gonna pretend that we’ve been writing it all along…)
We left Eugene at 3pm on Wednesday, about a day and a half later than we had planned. Fortunately, we have a bunch of flex time built into our 12(ish)-day-long trip to Georgia. We were so late leaving because, well, we have too much stuff. But maybe I should start by explaining the plan:
Phase 1: Load stuff and depart Eugene.
– Monday: Rent a Uhaul. Pack our stuff in it and take it to ABF. Load it onto the trailer. Go home and clean the apartment.
– Tuesday: Drop off apartment keys and leave town. Drive from Eugene to Yosemite National Park in one day.
Monday went well… we put in a good 12 hours of packing and trailer loading, then came home and realized how much stuff was STILL in the apartment. We worked on packing and cleaning, but by midnight we realized we had too much to do, and decided we’d probably not be able to leave til Wednesday morning. Put in another big day Tuesday, and finished loading the trailer (photo below). The ABF guy was very impressed with our loading ability… we credit it to years of tetris. We stayed up til about 3am cleaning the apartment, then got a little sleep and woke up Wed. AM to start again.
Our stuff in the ABF trailer... 9 feet deep.
One thing we underestimated were the errands that have to be made before a big move. Giving away food food, electronic waste, gifts to a few special folks, and about six loads to Goodwill took a huge hunk of time. (Also, more apartment cleaning… that place was spotless by the time we were finished with it. Magic erasers get most of the credit). Then on Wednesday when we packed the truck, it was too full so something had to get shipped. We decided it should be the musical instruments, so we had to run around, find a box big enough to put them in (a bike shipping box was the perfect size for a guitar, fiddle, and mandolin), pack them (the FedEx guy was impressed with the way we packed, so hopefully that means they will arrive safely), and overnight them to TN.
Finally we had everything ready and dropped off the apartment keys, when the landlady told us we had a package there. It was the copies of my thesis, which had been there for over a month but we hadn’t been notified. So that added one last errand on the way out of town… delivering DT his copy of my thesis. It was a proud way to leave town, and a fitting cap to our six-year stay in Eugene.
